2006 Delay For HD-DVD

Toshiba's advantage of first release over Sony's Blu-Ray format is in jeopardy. Toshiba has announced that their 30 GB dual layer HD-DVD format will be delayed until 2006 - the same time Playstation 3 is scheduled to be released. Toshiba should just give it up and let Blu-Ray be the future HD disc format.

In other Sony format news, the company has announced that 17 million UMDs have been sold so far since the release of the PSP. Sony has sold 8.2 million movies and 9 million PSP games. Sony estimates by the end of 2008, 130 million UMDs will be sold.

Xbox Games Partially Compatible With Xbox 360

Microsoft has officially stated that only certain Xbox games with be backwards compatible with the upcoming Xbox 360. The company is working with publishers that are currently producing games for the original Xbox to include an emulation code within the game software so they will play on the Xbox 360.

For older games, word is the hard drive will contain emulation codes for the better quality Xbox games (Halo, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dead or Alive, etc.). However, the emulation files on the hard drives may not always work on your Xbox games to be Xbox 360 compatible. Microsoft should just put an Xbox processor inside the Xbox 360 so all games will be playable.

Microsoft has officially announced the retail price for their next-generation game console. Microsoft will release two bundles. The core bundle (retails for $299) will contain the console, a wired controller, Xbox 360 faceplate, and a standard AV cable. The best value bundle (retails for $399) includes everything from the core bundle, except the controller is wireless and the standard AV cable is replaced with a component HD-AV cable. Zelda: Twilight Princess Delayed (Again!)

The most anticipated game of 2005 will not even be released this year. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess originally scheduled for a spring 2005 release, then delayed until holiday 2005, now won't be released until spring 2006. By that time, Nintendo will probably delay again stating that they want to release the game onto The Revolution.

The delay is caused by the development team needing more time to produce a better game. Clearly, Nintendo is opening the door for Microsoft's Xbox 360 to take even more market share away from Nintendo.
